Although this edition of The Wandering Inn does check in with Erin and friends, most of the story focuses on some of the other Earthlings we've only had brief glimpses of before. Geneva was a third year medical student when she got ported to Baleros and took a job with one of the many mercenary companies. Physicians are almost unheard of in this world, since potions can heal almost anything, but when the company lost its potions Geneva was the only hope the wounded had and so they called her The Last Light. The Blind Emperor Laken has been quietly living his life as Doreen's boyfriend but an avalanche forced him to claim the village to save people so the word is out. There are also a pair of twins caught up in the court of The King of Destruction as well as a group of twenty stuck on the frontlines of a demonic horde.
When last we saw Geneva she got fired for treating the wounded from both sides of the battle, then she was mortally wounded and saved by the selphid who was assisting her with surgeries. Selphids are an unusual species. They are a parasitic collection of cells that inhabit dead bodies. Invading a still living host is forbidden because they can force the body to act against it's owner's will but the selphid are dying out and healing potions can't help so she acted to save the one person who heals without magic in the hopes that Geneva can save them. To that end several selphids have joined them as Geneva treats wounded as a neutral party at battlefields. Several newly arrived Earthlings took work with a "clean-up" company because they are supposed to be safer than normal merc companies. There is a good chance that dead bodies will rise as undead unless they are properly disposed of so therefore clean-up companies are essential to gather the bodies at night after a battle and destroy any that rise. Their interactions with the various species of Baleros are interesting but their meeting with Geneva gives them all a new direction.
Laken gave up his anonymity to help the local village of Riverfarm survive an avalanche. Once he claimed the village his Emperor's senses told him where all of the buried villagers were and almost everyone was saved. From the beginning he was angry with how the villagers treated Doreen who is half Troll. While they were happy to have her strength for difficult tasks they didn't pay her and their distrust forced her to live outside the village. Still, everyone is suitably grateful to both Laken and Doreen so he decides to use the gold he found with an Emperor skill to rebuild the village. Unfortunately, this requires going to the nearest city and visiting a bank and merchants so the chance of someone asking questions about an unknown man with a bag of gold and learning his class is very likely. Even more likely is that someone will sell that information on to the nobility who have carefully avoided allowing any Kings or Emperors on Izril.
Then there is a group of twenty Earthlings who were deliberately summoned to this world by the Blighted King who was following a prophecy that said this would summon the [Hero] his people needed in their endless war against the demons. As far we know this is these are the only Earthlings brought here on purpose and they proved to be a total disappointment. While they all have the [Hero] class, as it seems do all of the Earthlings that have appeared, it only appears to grant a bonus to the rate at which people level. This explains why Erin and Ryoka have leveled so much faster than locals. But it also means that the King has twenty young Earthlings who know nothing of war or survival. Several become [Warriors] but their levels and skills are too low to be useful. The worst is the young man who gained the unique class [Clown] but isn't actually funny. Then again, maybe an unfunny [Clown] is just what they need.
This is one of those books that seems to exist to add more depth to a series but I'm not sure how successful it was. I found Laken very interesting, the guy who gains the [Negotiator] class in Baleros interesting, and really hated the [Clown], although he reveals some new aspects of the whole leveling system. Fortunately, the Clown is the shortest segment and Laken the longest. It's hard to know how these people will fit into the overall story arc since only Laken is on the continent of Izril and is therefore the most likely to meet up with the others we know.
