The Death of Dulgath - more Riyria!
I have enjoyed every book in the 2 Riyria series (Riyria Revelations and Riyria Chronicles) and wrote a review 6 months back where I heartily recommend both of them. It is hard not to like any book with the main characters of Royce and Hadrian so the Death of Dulgath was an eagerly awaited addition to my audiobook library. With Tim Gerard Reynolds at the mic doing yet another excellent narration, listening to him voice Royce and Hadrian made me feel like I was back with old friends that I had not seen in a while. A welcome place to be.
Like every book in the series, The Death of Dulgath is full of the usual "Hadrian = naive, Royce =cynical" repartee and for a while it seemed like it was going to be more filler than substance, but there is more to the story than it first appears and the story definitely got interesting. Although this is book 3 of the Riyria Chronicles it could just as easily have been a stand-alone tale. Except for a few references to the Black Diamond Thieve's Guild there is little to tie this adventure into the larger story arc and that fact lessened it a just a little for me.
Any Riyria fan should not hesitate to pick this one up but if you haven't started the series yet I would recommend that you start with book 1 of either the Riyria Revelations or the Riyria Chronicles. Why would I recommend you start elsewhere when this story is mostly stand-alone? Because I expect you to crave more Riyria after your first book so you might as well start at one of the 2 customary beginnings. Michael J. Sullivan has created a rich world with interesting characters and anyone who enjoys Fantasy should give these books a try. if you have never listened to an audiobook, this series also makes a nice first foray into that realm as Tim Gerard Reynolds is a master and he greatly enhances the experience.
