This is a long series, and sometimes it gets bogged down in details about cultivation and/or blow by blow action scenes. However, every once in a while Zac learns a bit more about his origins and his connections to both the ancient Limitless Empire, which created the System, and the Technocrats, that would prefer to destroy it. This fifteenth book in the series spends much less time on cultivation and instead makes major advances in both the main plot as well as secondary characters and sub-plots, which has reignited my interest in this series, especially after book fourteen wasn't as exciting as I had hoped it would be.
At the end of fourteen, Zac struck a major blow in the inter-sector war which briefly energized the armies of Zecia sector, but sadly their losses have been too great and the powerful are abandoning the sector which only worsens their defenses. Zac hadn't intended to pursue the Foreign Gods weapons he learned about in fourteen because they are located deep in the Kan'Tanu sector and there are only three years before the Left Imperial Palace opens, but the system once again sends him on a collision course with destiny by giving him his final Flamebearer quest and requiring him to activate the weapons. Naturally, the Undead Empire insists on sending Kador along so Zac uses their assistance to combine the mission with rescuing Villari. Things are immediately complicated by Kador's personal plans, a civil war in the Undead Empire, and several seal bearers from more powerful sectors all confined in an deadly bit of unstable space.
Thrown into this chaotic mess are important revelations. It seems that the Left Imperial Palace is not just an inheritance trial and that while Emperor Limitless drew on some of its power to create the system it's origins and purpose are much older than Zac imagined; the fate of the multiverse may balance on what happens. We get a glimpse of the Primo of the Undead Empire and learn why pursuing a dao of pure Death is forbidden in the Empire. The Creators who build the ships Zac and Zecia depend on may have betrayed Zac. The personal stories of secondary characters like Ogras, Catheya, Tavza, Kruta, and Iz become deeper and the Atwood Empire is growing and consolidating its power to protect Earth.
A lot happens and a lot is learned in this book. Next stop: The Left Imperial Palace. Will Zac truly become a Flamebearer of Ultom? Knowing this series the answer is probably yes, but what exactly will that mean for Zac, Earth, and the Multiverse?
