The prior book in this series ended with the unthinkable, Ace Ryker becoming a Hand of God. James Crowley found it hard enough to believe that he could be given a chance to atone for the sins of his life by serving the White Throne, but Ace Ryker? There wasn't a repentant bone in his body, so it was now more impossible than ever to tell good from evil. Crowley no longer wanted to be part of this eternal battle, but he wasn't ready to spend eternity in hell just yet, as Rosa still needed saving. Unfortunately, Crowley was now on the run from the man who had already killed him once, and he still wasn't sure exactly how he was going to bring Rosa back to the land of the living. The one thing he was sure of, though, is that he would pay any price to make it happen.

The set-up here is great and the story doesn't disappoint as Crowley tries to find a way to give Rosa the chance at life she has always deserved. The pace of the action is well done, the story takes enough turns to always be interesting, and there are even a few surprise characters along the way to keep things fresh. This series has been a great change of pace from the standard fantasy tropes and I was all set to give it a glowing review until I found out one disturbing fact. The authors consider this series complete. What?!?!? Hell no. I was in a good spot after listening to this one and eager for the next one due to the myriad of threads that still remain open, so it certainly didn't feel like a series finale to me. So as a book in a longer series, this one is great. As a series finale, not so much. Still, I recommend giving this series a listen as Roger Clark is the perfect narrator for this tale and his performance is top notch.

Farewell James Crowley, I can only hope we will meet again some day.
