Despite being the most capable warrior the trolls have seen in generations, Tryton was never comfortable with the war-like ways of his people. He took it upon himself to change that, and he has managed to forge peace for his people. Now the rock trolls play the role of protectors instead of killers, inspiring respect instead of fear. Rock troll society has also drastically changed and children are now raised by their parents. This was important to Tryton and he has now raised 3 children of his own since the last book. However, despite the new peaceful existence he has created for his family, Tryton has still trained all of his children for war. They are all capable warriors, which is good because as they come of age the ugly specter of war returns. A war that threatens all races, not just the trolls, but only the martial prowess of the trolls can save them all...
This one starts slowly with Tryton's children being established as characters, but before you know it the threat of war is upon them. This was an odd one for me because it felt like the threat started slowly and it was more gut feel than anything else, and the next thing you know a massive army was on their doorstep. It all felt way too rushed for me, but I have come to understand that this trilogy is offering a different perspective on events that occurred in another series of books by Ben Hale, and anyone who has read that series seems to leave a positive review about this one. I lack that perspective though, so for me I can only judge it based on this series alone. Once the war started, then this book picked up the pace and it was an interesting ride all the way to the end.
Overall I enjoyed the series although looking back I would likely have been just as happy ending it after the first book which was my favorite of the three. Audible does offer the entire series in a single boxed set so it is a no brainer to pick it up that way.
Ralph Lister does his usual solid job with the audiobook but he still remains an odd choice of narrator for this series. His British accent when voicing rock trolls doesn't bother me, but your mileage may vary.
