James Crowley is used to travelling alone, but this time he finds himself on the way to Crescent City with a few companions. Rosa, Bram Stoker, Irish, and Harker all return from the first book, and their presence certainly makes things complicated for Crowley. He is being sent to Crescent City by the White Throne to deal with the "Betrayer", and that's not exactly information he can share with his travelling companions. Two of which, Bram and Rosa, happen to be very interested in the supernatural, and that lends itself to some uncomfortable conversations on the road. As they get closer to town the situation starts to spiral out of control as one of them is mortally wounded. They must seek immediate medical attention in town only to find that Crescent City has been overrun by supernatural beings and they are entering a powder keg of a situation. Out of the frying pan and into the fire, typical Crowley.
Although this series is only getting started, it continues to impress and entertain me. This story moves along at a brisk pace, and as Crowley figures out exactly who the Betrayer is then the depth of the world building starts to show itself. This series certainly seemed like it was going to be mostly episodic in nature, with Crowley going from one assignment to the next fighting on behalf of the White Throne, but it is turning out to be a lot more interesting than that. At the time I didn't like the final scene of the first book which was the first step in setting up this bigger picture, but now that more of the larger plot has revealed itself I do find myself interested in it. The series is worth checking out if you are looking for something a little different, and if you are an Audible member, then just grab the free novella and try before you buy.
Speaking of audible, Roger Clark is an awesome narrator for this content and I'm glad I found this series just to experience his voice work. Listening is definitely recommended over reading.
