The revelation that Atlantis was real might have gone differently if humans hadn't realized that the Atlanteans were also manipulating the politics and economies of the rest of the world. Atlantis had powerful magics, including the godly Arcana with their strange Aspects, but humanity had armies, bombs, and fear on their side. By the time peace was negotiated the Island of Atlantis was uninhabitable, so part of the treaty included an island for them build New Atlantis. Not much else changed. The Arcana are still psychotic power hungry despots and Atlantis is still a dangerous place to live even for Atlanteans. The Arcana of Atlantis were the inspiration for the major arcana in a tarot deck but their Aspects may or may not be related to that concept. Lord Sun might become a ball of sunlight so bright it's literally blinding or appear as a man covered in flames. Lady Judgement on the other hand appears to be spider/woman hybrid descending from a web above the onlooker. It's a combination of personal power, self-awareness, and magical affinity.

Rune St. John loathes prophets and seers. He will be the most beautiful man of his generation according to a Seer when he was born. When the Sun Estate of the St. John family was attacked fifteen years ago and everyone else was killed, including his father the Arcana known as Lord Sun, Rune was pulled aside for hours of sexual assault by nine men in masks. He survived, as did his soul bound human Companion Brand, but no one could identify who was responsible for the atrocity. Not that most of the other Courts cared overmuch, but its their prerogative to decide if such an action is required, and if it is they want to be there to get a share of the spoils. Rune suspects one or more of the Arcana must know something but the only one he trusts at all is The Tower who took Rune in and protected him until his majority. Rune doesn't care how long it takes, after all, Atlanteans can live hundreds of years thanks to the rejuvenation magics of Lady Priestess, but he intends to find everyone involved and make them pay.

In the meantime Rune and Brand do mercenary work or private investigations. They almost never turn down work from The Tower, partially out of gratitude and partially because its not safe to annoy an Arcana. This time The Tower is concerned about the disappearance of one of his godsons, Addam, one of Lady Judgement's sons. Neither of Addams business partners is helpful but using a clairvoyance spell in his office reveals that he was abducted by an extremely powerful and evil something. Rune still has basically nothing to go on until he gets a mysterious message from Addams younger brother, a very talented and still somewhat sane Seer. He points Rune to a Principality known as Ciaran. Principalities are essentially Arcana level powers that don't hold one of the Thrones and Ciaran is older than several of the Arcana. Ciaran happens to know that there's only one place in New Atlantis that Lady Judgement wouldn't be able to find her son. Unfortunately, its the only place on the island more haunted than Sun Estate so they find themselves dealing with several types of undead. Miraculously, Addam is still very much alive. Unfortunately, he has absolutely no idea who abducted him or why.

From there things just get stranger and more interesting. These people are just dealing with one calamity after another as they face off with a horror not seen in several hundred years. The magic is very well done as is the setting.  Rune's personal history could be triggering for people especially when he is forced to relive part of it. The sexual assault isn't described in graphic detail but its still enough to be disturbing. The violence however has plenty of grim detail to make up for it. Several of the characters are homosexual including Rune himself although there isn't much in the way of romance. This isn't an issue for the characters as Atlantean society is described as mostly bisexual. One common complaint in reviews is about the lack of major female characters which gets resolved in book two. The other complaint is the less than stellar dialog when Rune is trying to be snarky with Brand. Its simply lame rather than snarky.

The Audible narration by Josh Hurley is rated at 4.7 stars and reviews of it are all positive.
