Each book in the Street Rats of Aramoor series has focused on a different tribe of kids, and it is now time for Wildfire to be front and center. However, the title is also a bit misleading as 80% of the book has nothing to do with Wildfire and it isn't until the very end of the book that it does. The majority of the story follows Ayrion, and a group of Lancers, as they perform a secret mission for the King. They are tasked with rescuing an ambassador and his wife that are both being held hostage by the rival kingdom of Cylmar. This mission takes them on a long, dangerous journey that consumes the majority of the book and Wildfire is not involved in any way until the mission is over and Ayrion returns to Aramoor. That's unfortunate but this is still an entertaining story that moves this series ever closer to the transition point from this prequel series over to Michael Wisehart's main series, The Aldoran Chronicles, where Ayrion is no longer a street rat.
Ayrion's mission starts in the middle of the night and he and his team are sent off without warning, which means he has no opportunity to tell his fellow co-chiefs Reevie and Sapphire before leaving. Of course his absence will have an impact on his tribe of street rats, but Wisehart chose not to provide multiple PoV characters to tell that side of the story, so we don't find out the consequences of his absence until the final 20% of the book. The good news is that Ayrion's mission is an interesting one and the encounters along the way make for an entertaining story, especially when circumstances connect Ayrion with his past. It does leave me feeling like the Wildfire tribe got shortchanged in the process. This series has one more book before the events of The Aldoran Chronicles, the series where you get to experience what Ayrion is like an as adult in his role as Guardian Protector of the King.
Tim Gerard Reynolds is excellent as always as the narrator of the audiobook version, so I definitely recommend listening if you have the chance to do so.
