Marshall Ryan Maresca

When last we saw Sergeant Corrie Welling of the Maradaine Constabulary she was abducted while investigating a child slavery ring and thrown into a ship along with the latest victims. Corrie is the nineteen year old foul mouthed younger sister of Minox Welling and is now no longer is a minor character in the Maradaine Constabulary series. An Unintended Voyage is the first of Maresca's books to take place beyond the city of Maradaine. Its great to see more of the world and interact with people from many different cultures as Corrie attempts to make her way home from the other side of the globe.

The book starts out strong with the kids attempting to seize control of the ship followed by a sudden storm and shipwreck. After that Corrie's main opponents are greed and bureaucracy until an eclipse causes a mob of fanatics to go crazy. Almost every supporting character comes from a distinct culture which is interesting but also feels like a missed opportunity because that diversity has only a superficial impact on the plot. A good backstory can be worthwhile on its own but ideally there should be some aspect that affects either the plot or development of the main character.

It's still a decent book overall, just not as complicated as Maresca's other novels and even he admits it was an afterthought to the main overlapping stories in Maradaine. If you liked all the others then it's worth reading, although there is only a tiny glimpse of what might be happening back in Maradaine at the same time so it can also be skipped. An Unintended Voyage isn't out in audiobook. Audible has the first two of the Maradaine Constabulary and the three Thorn of Dentonhill books.
