A game wide message went out congratulating the Scrap Rats for building what everyone thought was a useless guild hall expansion, the mana lounge, then everyone is kicked from the game and it's just gone. But those training in the Deadlands witness the sudden appearance of a massive tower as all sorts of monsters from the game start appearing. Ren does his best to warn the other districts and the Scrap Rats security specialists make their recommendations to their allied districts but security is expensive and would restrict the flow of commerce that connects the districts so most compromise. The wealthier districts ignore the warnings entirely. The corporations are instead focused on controlling the new resource nodes in the Deadlands and exploring the new Tower with their game guild teams. Worst of all, Victor's father died and he now controls Prosperous, Inc and his combination of greed and poor decision making skills leads to enormous monster tides. Can the districts survive in this new magical world?
The Scrap Rats are ready but even district one hadn't expected the monster tides so many of their teams are out capturing and defending nodes when it happens. The corporations are still playing the games of the old reality and are shocked to find that D1 isn't. In fact, D1 is undermining the corps by evacuating the workers who managed to survive the first tide and refuses to cooperate with them to rebuild. After all, they were warned. D1 also has a secret weapon, an exact replica of their guild hall appeared including the mysterious mana lounge which turns out to concentrate ambient mana within the building. Starting with Ren's necromancer girlfriend the Rats staying there begin developing spell skills and alchemy potions brewed there work as they did in game. Too bad there are too many spies to keep it a secret forever.
Out in the Deadlands various Rats are finding out things the hard way. At least some of the monsters and NPC faction from the games are now in the real world and they remember how they were treated. There are even some massively powerful boss creatures out there who want revenge. There are also surprising encounters to be had and from one of them Ren and his girlfriend get a major power up while learning that the game and Tower are part of Earth's induction to the multiverse community and that everyone is waiting to see how this new world should be approached. Turns out that Ren, as the leader of the group who reaches the tower first is automatically designated Earth's leader. Naturally, Victor challenges this and insists on a duel to the death for the title. Everything hinges upon the combat ability of a coward who hid in alchemy labs.
The series "ends" here but makes it clear that there will be more of Earth's story in this new multiverse to come. Since I read the series there is a new book scheduled in a few months. I didn't take the time to read the three side books which apparently focus on other characters and flesh out their stories so I can't comment on them. Overall, these last three books without the game were more interesting than all but the first book. Characters are exploring, figuring out new puzzles, and dealing with hard choices as their existence is threatened. The first monster tide in particular gets a lot of attention as the PoV goes from district to district and we see where each of them succeeded and failed in defending themselves. There's less humor in these books and more death. The ending answers the remaining questions, such as how Ren ended up getting a new timeline, although I personally thought the end scenes were shorter and more abrupt than the rest of the books.
