God's attention seems to be elsewhere and as Lucifer unleashes his minions on Earth, God makes no answer. The year is 1348 and the Black Death is rampant, but that's just a small part of the problem. The war between heaven and hell has spilled over on to Earth and a young girl rich in faith tries to fight back against the horrors. Is it her faith that makes this possible, or is she just as mad as everyone else? Thomas isn't sure, but as a fallen knight who dreams of redemption, he can't help but take up her cause, no matter how annoying she happens to be. This unlikely duo travels around medieval France coming up against one horror after another, and while Thomas tries to solve every problem through killing, Delphine urges peace. They may disagree on the methods for fighting back against Hell's minions, but why is it up to them in the first place? Where is God and why is he allowing this to happen?

I'm not usually a fan of Heaven vs Hell stories, but I have seen this one recommended many times on reddit and it also happens to be highly rated by reviewers, so I decided to give it a chance. It offers up a unique blend of historical events mixed with fantasy that has a dark, fever-dream vibe to it. The popularity of this one surprises me, because it offers up a rather niche story telling recipe and would not expect it to have wide appeal. I did like the characters in this one, but it was the vibe of the story and the constant mixing of illusion and reality that kept me from becoming fully invested. So while I did really enjoy it at times, it wasn't enough for me to pick up the next book in the series, but your mileage may vary. Certainly my opinion seems to be in the minority and maybe someday I'll change my mind.

Steve West did a great job narrating the audiobook version and he made it an enjoyable experience, so listening is a good option.
