The 7th floor of the dungeon was abruptly destroyed, so this instead of the 7th floor this book takes place on the 8th, known as The Ghosts of Earth. Each team's leader must pick a location to start, and despite being well prepared for the Bahamas, Carl and Donut wind up in Cuba because Donut isn't exactly great at geography. Because no crawlers were eliminated on the aborted 7th floor, the AI has made the floor extra deadly in an attempt to dwindle down the number of crawlers before the 9th floor Faction Wars. This level requires the crawlers to collect monsters ala Pokemon in order to build out the decks they will use to combat other crawlers and NPCs in a real time version of Magic the Gathering. Of course, every part of this is done in a ridiculous over the top manner that culminates in an insane multiplayer card battle with everything at stake.
This one starts with a flashback to explain Mordecai's (Donut's manager) hatred of Odette and Chaco, two other personalities that have roles related to the dungeon and the promotion of it. This helps explain some of the meta-story taking place outside the dungeon, and presents Carl with the opportunity he so desperately needs to get real revenge against those running the dungeon. All Carl and Donut can do within the dungeon is survive and help other crawlers do the same, but Carl wants to take a few of the show-runners out before he goes and it turns out that there are others outside the dungeon that are sympathetic to his cause. Unfortunately, that's a whole other level of politics that Carl is only beginning to understand, but it does add an interesting element that keeps this series entertaining.
Jeff Hays delivers another excellent performance for the audiobook version, but this time he is joined by two others guest narrators. Jeff originally modeled his voice for Carl on the actor Patrick Warburton, so Patrick voices one of the characters in this book, as does accomplished narrator and author, Travis Baldree.
