Liscor is recovering from the overwhelming assault by the undead and the dungeon boss called Skinner. The city blames the four silver-ranked adventuring teams who went into the crypt for stirring up the undead, but only Yvlon survived and she's catatonic from what she saw. The citizens can hardly grasp that it was a combination of a crazy human innkeeper, Antinium workers, goblins, and a [skeleton warrior] with levels in [barmaid] that brought Skinner down. None of that group feels the same afterwards, except maybe Erin who isn't really a deep thinker. Torvand the skeleton is depressed because he and his crappy sword weren't more effective. The goblin Rags, who started out as a [scavenger] and then added [tactician] by learning chess from Erin, did finally gain [warrior] for dealing the killing blow to Skinner, but she's still a very small goblin with no real power to improve things for her tribe. And Erin is depressed because most of the Antinium defending her died, including her friend Klbkch, who was both the Prognugator of his hive and a guardsman of Liscor.

In the aftermath, Erin is feeling rather lonely as the Inn feels empty without the Horns of Hammerad, the Antinium, or even the goblins. She's back to having only the homeless [necromancer] Pisces as a regular guest and he never has money, which is why he gave her Torvand the skeleton in the first place. Pisces is depressed because he did more to save Liscor than anyone else and everyone still hates him just because he's a [necromancer]. He's still denying that he cares about Ceria's death when he receives a faint magical message from her letting him know she is in fact still alive. Erin is determined to help him rescue her but they have difficulty convincing anyone to help and the city forbids it because they fear more undead coming from the crypt.

Ryoka, the City Runner, finally realizes that her mysterious customer Teriarch put a compulsion on her to deliver his letter to the infamous [necromancer] Az'Kerash and breaks free. She also barges back into his cave and demands he give her a way to find the guy. She's on her way back by the Inn when her iPhone rings. The magical group chat is both funny and provides hints of deeper plotlines than we'd seen so far. Her adventures delivering the message to Az'Kerash not only add him to our list of characters but drag her through a battlefield where she meets the famous drake [general] Zel Shivertail.

Liscor is excited about the appearance of a named adventurer! Adventurer ranks go bronze, silver, gold, and then the true celebrity status of a named adventurer capable of clearing a dungeon solo. Gazi the Omnipotent is half-gazer with one large center eye surrounded by four smaller eyes that can literally roll back until she can see behind herself. Most people are in awe of her and Erin really likes her, but a few, like Ryoka and the gnoll Kershia, are wary. Ryoka because she doesn't trust anyone and Kershia because she is aware of Gazi's past where she was one of the King of Destruction's trusted generals as he tried to conquer the world.

Rags the goblin is probably the most changed by the events of the first book. We learned only a little about the goblins before now, including the fact that [Terror] effects are useless against them because goblins are always afraid. Rags is a barely mature goblin of about three years. Few goblins reach ten years in age and she wants to be one of them, but the problem is how best to ensure her survival. Goblins are small and weak except for the few who suddenly start growing into hobgoblins, but even a hob isn't the equal of a bronze ranked adventurer. So for goblins it's all about the tribe. As a tribe grows in numbers, so too grows the power of its [chieftain] and [shamans] if they have any. The Flooded Waters tribe hasn't had a shaman in a long time and their current chieftain is fairly typical. Rags comes to the obvious conclusion; as a [tactician] she must become [Chieftain] and conquer the surrounding tribes to not only strengthen her tribe, but also to prevent them from annoying the cities so much that they pay adventurers to wipe out the local goblins.

This second book is an improvement on the first. Now that we are familiar with the world building the author spends less time following Erin around as she does ridiculous things. Note, Erin never stops doing absurd things that somehow turn out remarkably well, we just spend less time on them. We're now getting a sense for the politics and history of the world such as why everyone hates and fears goblins, necromancers, and the Antinium. We've also had several "interludes" that offer the stories of other Earth humans and their effect on this new world.
