While the country crumbles around her, newly promoted Secretary of Defense Charlize Montgomery plans to risk her own life in an attempt to save her disabled son Ty; however, before she can figure how she is going to get the job done the new President sends a team of marines to get the job done. Unfortunately those marines are not prepared for the rise of the "Sons of Liberty" who have formed their own army and have taken control of the area in Colorado where Ty was last seen. Meanwhile in nearby Estes Park, the inhabitants are still struggling to find their way forward and deal with life in the aftermath of an EMP attack. Winter is approaching and tempers flare about how best to handle enforcing the law and feeding everyone with an impending food shortage on the horizon.

Fighter pilot Nathan Sardetti, who is the brother of the Secretary of Defense and stranded in Estes Park, also plans to attempt to rescue Ty and he enlists the help of Raven on this potential suicide mission. Police Chief Colton agrees to lend them the lone working vehicle for the rescue attempt and not everyone agrees with that decision. Opposing factions form within the small community as many disagree with the policies of Police Chief Colton and Estes Park becomes a fractured community as tough decisions need to be made on how best to survive the winter.

Despite all the action it is still less than a week after the EMP attack and the series continues to inject American Indian folklore into the story as it maintains the macro and micro threads that started in book one. So if you liked Trackers then you will like this as well and it is now obvious that this series is not playing the long game as it pertains to the apocalyptic setting. Bronson Pinchot narrates the audiobook version and I felt he did a better job on book two and is now firmly established as the voices of the characters at this point.
