Hell Divers has always been one of my favorite popcorn sci-fi series, one that definitely needs to be turned into a video game and/or TV series, but I must admit the premise is kind of ridiculous. Humanity turns the Earth into a nuclear wasteland (the most believable part) and the only survivors live in airships that fly above the nuclear storms, having done so for 250 years. It's a stretch to believe but I was willing to accept it for the insane environment it created for story telling. It worked really well, delivering an excellent series, even if it was a tad drawn out. Now Nicholas Sansbury Smith goes back in time and gives us a prequel that explains how and why the Earth was destroyed, and the role that ITC played in the whole affair. Does he finally offer us enough insight to make this whole premise believable?

Originally published back in 1959, and winner of the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 1960, Starship Troopers is a classic sci-fi novel that has been considered controversial from the day it was first published. It bears little resemblance to the 1997 movie with the same name and there are many different takes on why it is controversial. Set 700 years in the future, it's a coming of age story for Johnny Rico, who joins the military upon reaching his 18th birthday. Boot camp is no picnic and I frankly love the writing about Johnny's experiences after signing up. He goes through hell, even earning himself a few lashes for disobeying an order, but in the end he learns to respect and trust those around him. Unlike the YA coming of age stories of today, the adult leaders are not portrayed as morons, and they seem to be people worthy of their rank. A quality that definitely gets passed down to Johnny as he struggles to find his own path in life.

Eight years in the making, the adventures of Xavier "X" Rodriguez finally come to a close, and despite the fact that this moment is clearly overdue, it is still bittersweet. Nicholas Sansbury Smith writes a lot of post apocalyptic fiction, and if you described each of his series to me, this is the one I would be the least interested in. When I reviewed the first book in this series I wrote "I found that I was able to put aside the improbability of it all and just enjoy the thrill ride. The characters were interesting, the scenario was unique, and I thought it had a good mix of grit, heroism, and despair. So if you want something different, but not too deep, then put on your radiation suit get ready to dive - The Hive needs you." So, now that we have reached the end of this thrill ride, does the finale deliver the ending this series so richly deserves?

Despite growing in power as a wizard, Kazamir Wolfe still finds himself unable to do much to stop the impending convergence of our world with the netherworld. He does know that it will be apocalyptic if the gods of the netherworld make their way to Earth, so he must ensure that doesn't happen. His ability to see the flow of magic shows him that magic is growing throughout Europe and he can even see multiple anchor points where he expects portals will open when the time comes. However, all of his efforts to destroy those anchors have proven to be a waste of time. Frustrated and desperate, he convinces his eclectic team of misfits that the best course of action is to tackle the problem from the other side. That means it is time for a road trip into the netherworld itself. What could possibly go wrong?

Stopping a convergence from happening is priority number one, but the band of misfits trying to prevent the nether gods from invading our world isn't exactly the A team. A noob wizard who can barely control the magic he attempts to use, and usually winds up blind after he does anything, a talking dog, a cat from the nether, an untrustworthy djinn, and two knights from the past are partnered up with two operatives from the present in order to get the job done. Unfortunately they are up against an ancient organization with more resources and firepower, so they are going to need some assistance. If you think that the next member of the team is going to be an elite soldier capable of turning the tide of battle, think again, because it turns out to be a vacuum cleaner infested by a demon. The only reason that the djinn was able to summon a demon into our world in the first place is because the barrier between our world and the nether appears to be weakening. With time running out, Kazimir finally convinces everyone that it's time to go on the offensive.

Kazimir Wolfe remains on the run from both the law and an ancient order trying to kill him, but staying hidden is becoming harder and harder as his group of traveling companions continues to grow. It started with Duke the talking golden retriever, who's mind is inhabited by an ancient wizard, and then added on two knights that were sent forward through time to protect him. Then a wise cracking djinn was added, who does nothing but insult Kaz all the time for being stupid, and finally the grumpy 30 pound cat from the Nether, known as Mr Boots. As stated in book one, this urban fantasy doesn't take itself too seriously, and now that The Order has successfully opened a portal to the Nether, Kaz and his group of misfits must figure out how to close it. And then, of course, deal with the creatures that came through before the entire world realizes that magic is real. The dragon might have something to say about that though.

Kazimir Wolfe has been on the run since he was a teenager. It started the night that unknown assailants killed his aunt while he was out, and he has been on the run from those killers ever since. Those killers were looking for him that night, and from then on law enforcement has been as well, since they think he was the one who killed his aunt. Why did an unknown organization want to kill him as a teenager? Because he is wizard. And as far as Kaz knows, he is the only wizard in our modern times. And unfortunately, he isn't a very good one. I mean, there aren't any other wizards around to teach him, and It doesn't help that there isn't a lot of magic available in our world to work with. But there used to be, and now it is coming back. You would think that was a good thing for Kazimir, but not exactly. Magic seems to be building up for a "Convergence" between our realm and the Nether world, and only a wizard can stop it.

Exploring what it means to be human is an established sci-fi trope, especially in any book with sufficiently advanced androids; however, Human After All certainly takes a unique approach to this subject. The android population rose up against their oppressive masters (humans) decades ago, and they won the war easily. Now the androids rule the Earth and they have formed their own societal structures, but are they any better at stewarding the planet than their human predecessors? Not really. They seem to have learned a lot of our bad habits, and when a new "virus" starts to spread throughout the population, essentially turning them into android zombies, the new masters of the planet find their own existence in jeopardy. This is the backdrop that challenges the main character Freeman, the most advanced artificial life form ever created, to explore his existence and the nature of his humanity.

It is hard to believe that this series has reached book eleven already, but here we are. Xavier has finally stepped down and is no longer King of the Vanguard Islands, so he heads off with Magnolia in search of Michael, who is missing. Michael is out there somewhere trying to find a home for his family after they managed to escape the islands in the last book. Since they took the last remaining airship with them, Kade Long, who has taken over as king, has inherited an impossible situation. The Knights of the Coral Castle are coming for them, and they have no remaining air power of any kind. His master plan is to send out Gran Jefe, of all people, along with a few Barracudas to bring back two helicopters from an ancient facility. X, Michael, Kade and Gran Jefe means there are four separate story lines going on at the same time in four different locations. Has this series finally lost its way or does it all come together into something coherent?

Despite the Ash Angel victories in the prior books, the threat from the Dreads has only increased and the Ash Angel Organization finds itself on the verge of collapsing. Other Dread Loremasters have risen in power to fill the power vacuum at the top, and the war has grow so large that it now threatens entire cities of normals. As an Angel Born, Helo may possess power never before heard of, but that is also true of the new Dread leadership. Toss in the fact that Aclima is now back on the dark side, and Helo has limited options available to him. He knows that he can't win this fight without the other Ash Angels, but since he finds himself alone in his belief that Aclima can still be redeemed, joining up with them could cost Aclima her life. Despite his best efforts, Helo finds himself on a path where he may have to kill the only woman he has come to love in his afterlife in order for good to triumph over evil. Could he even do it?
