Mal and crew decide to take on a job on the remote moon of Abel, where a rich young woman seeks justice for the killing of her father. She hires the crew of Serenity to track down the man who killed her father in broad daylight in front of many witnesses, yet remains unpunished. Local law enforcement claims to be stretched too thin to bring the killer to justice, but as one would expect with a Firefly story, there is more to the situation than meets the eye. Mal's gut tells him to walk away from the job and he decides to do just that, but of course that would make for a short book, so things don't go according to plan and we are taken on yet another adventure with our favorite crew in the Verse.
Annie Roberts may be out for revenge, but she is only eighteen years old, and therefore Mal denies her request to be present when her father's killer is brought to justice. Mal may not want to bring her along, but she makes it clear from the start that she won't pay unless she's there, so he doesn't have much of a choice. Of course, the job gets complicated in all kinds of ways, and things go from bad to worse. The story is told with Annie being one of the main PoV characters and frankly I didn't really like that approach very much. I want each of these Firefly stories to provide me insight into the crew in new ways, and experiencing a large chunk of the story from Annie's perspective did none of that. It wasn't a terrible story, but it also wasn't one of the stronger entries in the series. Still, these stories remain our best option for spending more quality time on Serenity so it is still worth picking up.I still eagerly pick up the next one, which just came out a few days ago.
Because Annie's a PoV character, Emily Lawrence joined James Anderson Foster for the audiobook narration. She's definitely talented, but her presence only made the Annie PoV a worse decision because this required her to voice the entire crew when Annie was the PoV character, and there is no way she was going to do that as well as James Anderson Foster.
