I rarely read or listen to novellas, even when I like the series they are a part of, because they are usually too short to be satisfying. I am also of the mindset that if the stories were any good then they would have found their way into the full length books of the series. However, when I really like the series and the author puts out a collection of the short stories/novellas as a full sized book, then I will sometimes bite. I did that for The First Law series and it turned out just ok. So with no other options available for more stories in The Expanse universe I decided to give Memory's Legion a try. It contains 8 short stories that are spread across almost the entire story arc of The Expanse, and for the most part they are all worth your time. Some start a bit slow but once you get your bearings then each one is interesting enough and they are actually long enough to feel relatively complete. So if you want to spend some more time with Amos Burton, Bobbie Draper, or Fred Johnson then here's your chance.

1) Drive details the creation of the Epstein Drive which revolutionizes humanity's ability to traverse our solar system.

2) The Butcher of Anderson Station gives insight into how Fred Johnson earned his nickname and then wound up fighting on the side of the belters.

3) Gods of Risk exposes a bit of Bobbie Draper's experiences during the time between her being a Martian marine and working for Avesarala.

4) The Churn is definitely the best of the bunch. It takes place in Baltimore and shows how Timmy survived his early days and eventually became Amos Burton.

5) The Vital Abyss provides a different angle on some of the methods used to further proto-molecule research and the experiment on Eros.

6) Strange Dogs sheds light on the early days of the Martian colonists on Laconia and certain key events that take place to shape their future.

7) Auberon is a crime story that takes place on one of the Laconian colonies and shows the struggle against Laconian rule from a new angle.

8) The Sins of our Fathers lets us finally learn the fate of Naomi's son, as well as other human colonists, after they are cut off by the collapse of the Gate network.

For fans of The Expanse this collection is definitely worth your time and for audiobook listeners once you hear the voice of Jefferson Mays you will find yourself pulled right back in as he does his usual excellent job.
