Open world vampire survival game V Rising sounds fangtastic

Rock, Paper, Shotgun - Thu, 05/06/2021 - 17:38

Battlerite developers Stunlock Studios have come up with a different take on the online survival genre. In V Rising, every player is a vampire. You start with nothing but a mothball ridden cloak and a broken fang dangling from your mouth (I assume), and build up from there. Every neck gnawed is a step on the goal to building your own castle and crafting a Dracula-like legacy.

Rock, Paper, Shotgun - Thu, 05/06/2021 - 15:51

I've found that the dingy post-apocalyptic world of Metro Exodus always looked quite good, but today developers 4A Games made those visuals even better. They've released the Metro Exodus PC Enhanced Edition, expanding the FPS's ray tracing capabilities, increasing framerates and display resolutions, among other technical upgrades. You can download the Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition right now if you'd like, but be warned: it requires a ray tracing-capable GPU at the very minimum.

Mitrasphere blends classic JRPG artwork with modern gacha gameplay

Mitrasphere blends classic JRPG artwork with modern gacha gameplay

Crunchyroll Games has pulled back the curtain on its latest mobile release, a co-op JRPG by the name of Mitrasphere. This one first arrived back in 2017 in Japan, where it racked up over seven million downloads. It’s set in a world blanketed under a dense sea, which – as you might imagine – causes some complications for those just trying to live a normal life.

You can tackle its many missions alongside up to four other players, taking on bosses and acquiring legendary weapons as you go. One of Mitrasphere’s big draws is its artwork, with characters, monsters, and locations all rendered in a way that feels oddly nostalgic, especially if you’ve played plenty of classic JRPGs.

Gameplay-wise, you can switch between different classes, equipment, and characters on the fly to suit the task at hand. It obviously has a major focus on multiplayer, so it’s probably best experienced with friends or other players by your side.

Taiko No Tatsujin Pop Tap Beat Review -- Drum Solo

Gamespot Reviews - Thu, 05/06/2021 - 15:01

Some video game franchises seem destined for the mobile gaming scene, their format ideally suited for touchscreen controls or quick on-the-go gaming sessions. Bandai Namco's drum-pounding rhythm game Taiko no Tatsujin is the latest established franchise to make the jump to mobile, and it's a match made in heaven. Bright, colorful, and full of charm, Taiko no Tatsujin Pop Tap Beat will have you smiling from ear to ear as you tap tap tap away to its catchy soundtrack. It's just a shame that fun has such a short shelf life.

Pop Tap Beat follows the standard rhythm genre format: notes travel from one side of the screen to the other (in this case right to left), and you tap the screen when each one reaches a circle to score points. The closer to the circle the note is when you tap, the more in rhythm with the song you are and the more points you score. It's a simple system that's easy to understand and pick up even if this is your first time playing a rhythm game, making for a short learning curve and a longer focus on fun.

The gameplay loop offers incremental increases in challenge with each subsequent difficulty level, offering an experience that's challenging without ever feeling impossible. Notes come in two colors: red, which signals tapping the drum, and blue, which signals tapping around the edge of it. Higher difficulties will split the drum in half, meaning you not only have to pay attention to the color of each note but also keep in mind which side of the screen needs to be tapped. Pop Tap Beat mixes things up further with special notes, alleviating any monotony. These special notes include drum rolls with continuous tapping, golden drums for furious tapping, and balloon notes for a different kind of furious tapping.

Jade Raymond's Haven Studios gains more former Stadia staff

Rock, Paper, Shotgun - Thu, 05/06/2021 - 14:38

Back in March, Assassin's Creed co-creator Jade Raymond started up Haven Studios, an independent Canadian developer with plans to make a new PlayStation game. She had previously been the head of Stadia Games and Entertainment, but left after Google started shutting down its development studios earlier this year. Now it seems Raymond has tempted some other Google alums over for her new project, who also all happen to be former Ubisoft developers too.

I'm a sucker for a good menu noise

Rock, Paper, Shotgun - Thu, 05/06/2021 - 14:00

After I lived and breathed NieR Replicant for review, I looked back on my play time with a mixture of fondness and pain. The payoff of the fifth and final ending was worth the effort, but good lord was it a test of resolve. It was brilliance nestled in multiple layers of gift wrap, and I was happy to call it a day once I'd seen the final (x5) credits.

But one thing I haven't stopped thinking about is the menu sounds. NieR Replicant has excellent noises for its start menu and inventory management, both of which aided that sense of being transported to another world of monsters and emotion.

Eve Online will never die, says head of studio after 18 years

Rock, Paper, Shotgun - Thu, 05/06/2021 - 14:00

Whoever said "nothing is certain but death and taxes" never played Eve Online. The space-faring MMORPG has no central government to shake you down for road money, and space pilots are cloned anew after every ignoble death. After 18 years and countless updates, Eve is one of the longest-running MMOs in the industry. It predates World of Warcraft by over a year. It is older than Facebook. Alongside long-toothed MMOs like Runescape, it has survived where others have fallen. But surely even this infamous generator of sci-fi skulduggery must pay the final toll some time. Well, not according to Hilmar Veigar Pétursson, CEO of the game's developer, CCP.

"It's never going to die," he says.

Even Super Mario 64 has ray tracing now

Rock, Paper, Shotgun - Thu, 05/06/2021 - 13:43

The PC’s never-ending march to add ray tracing to everything has now made it onto other platforms. Super Mario 64 RT (or 'SMT64RT' if you're pressed for time) is the latest, albeit unofficial version of the Nintendo 64 classic for PC, grafting a lighting system onto the 24-year-old console game. Digital Foundry took a look at the mod and cried fully dynamic and simulated tears of joy.

Upcoming gothic fantasy roguelike Rogue Lords makes you play as a cheating devil

Rock, Paper, Shotgun - Thu, 05/06/2021 - 13:03

Rogue Lords is an upcoming gothic fantasy roguelike being developed by Cyanide Studio (the creators of Blood Bowl and Styx) and Leikir, and it's set to release this year. It caught my eye when it was first announced amidst the notE3 celebrations last year, mostly due to the eerie aesthetic and cool concept art shown during publisher Nacon's announce-a-thon stream. But today, the devs released a new gameplay trailer that's piqued my interest once more, because it shows that players can kind of cheat to win runs.

How the role of women has evolved in the Yakuza series

Rock, Paper, Shotgun - Thu, 05/06/2021 - 12:00

From the beginning of its inception, Yakuza was a game made for the adult male audience in Japan. It’s a point that its creators have previously brought up when interviewed about the games.

Yet, as the entire mainline series is finally available on PC, Yakuza has become an international hit for Sega, and I’m thrilled that many new converts and some of the most vocal cheerleaders are women. Coming to the latest entry, Yakuza: Like A Dragon (LAD for short), there are a lot of drastic changes to the formula, from new protagonist Ichiban to a turn-based JRPG battle system - but one notable shift is its relationship with women.

Frostpunk Mobile is an enhanced version of the hit strategy game

Pocket Tactics - Thu, 05/06/2021 - 11:30
Frostpunk Mobile is an enhanced version of the hit strategy game

Post-apocalyptic survival strategy game Frostpunk is making the move to mobile, courtesy of NetEase and the game’s original creator, 11 Bit Studios. Frostpunk Mobile, as it’s known, tasks you with leading the last city on Earth, managing essential resources, and finding a way to keep your people alive through what looks to be a never-ending winter.

While this new version is seemingly authentic to the original 2018 release, it does come bearing some fresh features, including a roguelike adventure mode, extra character development, law and guild systems, and a station where you can hold rare animals.

PCGamesN, our sister site, dropped a Frostpunk PC review at launch, calling it “a management game that doesn't concern itself with micromanagement,” but rather “the macro moral decisions of a leader.” This lines up with NetEase and 11 Bit Studios’ aims for the mobile version, with Ethan Wang, NetEase’s vice president, saying that both companies have a “shared vision to inspire a deeper exploration of humanity” with Frostpunk Mobile.

Mobile Legends tier list – the best characters in each class

What are the best Mobile Legends characters? MOBAs are famously addictive, and Moonton’s mobile offering has a fanatical player base to rival genre stalwarts like LoL and Dota 2 - and a massive hero pool to go with it. Rather than spend hours poring over Mobile Legends stats and trialling each of the heroes yourself, we’ve compiled a Mobile Legends tier list so you can jump straight in with the strongest, most impactful Mobile Legends characters - and know which of your foes are the most dangerous on the battlefield.

There are only a select few Mobile Legends free heroes - you’ll have to unlock the majority of them through battle points, which you’ll earn by playing the game, or using diamonds you buy from the store. Typically, new Mobile Legends heroes are stronger and more expensive, to entice you into spending your hard earned coin - but never fear; with the help of our Mobile Legends tier list, you’ll be able to select the most competitive Mobile Legends characters from each class.

We’ve chosen the best characters in each of the six classes for our Mobile Legends tier list. You’ll still need to pay attention to your team composition, but any of these Mobile Legends heroes are strong choices for solo queue - and in case they’re banned by the enemy team, we’ve given you a few strong alternatives you should consider unlocking as backup.

Warzone's getting a new rifle tonight, and it's a goodun

Rock, Paper, Shotgun - Thu, 05/06/2021 - 11:15

It's been a little while since Call Of Duty: Warzone Season 3 nuked Verdansk into the 1980s, and we've had time to get used to the two new weapons. They're both okay bits of kit, but haven't had a huge impact on the meta. So it's good to know that there's a new gun dropping tonight that'll likely shake things up nicely.
